Senegal ’92 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medallist Ajibade Babalade has tipped Super Eagles winger Victor Moses to prove his worth in the summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Moses, who joined Liverpool from Chelsea on a season-long loan last year after slipping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, has been limited to eight starts and 13 substitute appearances for the Reds in the season following Raheem Sterling’s return to form.
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi and other Nigerians have expressed their concerns over Moses’ bench role at Liverpool, with less than four months to the World Cup, but Babalade insists the 23-year-old can handle the situation.
“Moses is a player we shouldn’t write off because he is not playing many games at Liverpool,” the former Austria-based defender, popularly called Kunde, told our correspondent on the telephone during the week.
“He is a good player and he showed his class at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last year.
“In fact, he was instrumental in our winning the tournament. He also proved himself during the World Cup qualifiers.
“I believe he will prove his worth in the World Cup because he has the quality to do it. He will emerge as one of the stars of the World Cup.
“We shouldn’t be disturbed by what’s happening to him at Liverpool at the moment.”
The former Nigeria centre-back said the Eagles should not be afraid of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and other world stars in Brazil.
Babalade added, “Neymar, Messi and Ronaldo are human beings. We shouldn’t be afraid of any player in the World Cup.
“Football is a team game and if we play as a team in Brazil, we can reach the second round or the quarterfinals. We shouldn’t deceive ourselves: we can’t win the World Cup now.
“Our players shouldn’t feel inferior because they are not playing for big clubs. They must believe in themselves and play as a team.
“I was unknown when (former Nigeria coach) Clemens Westerhof took me to Senegal ’92 and asked me to mark the highly-rated (Senegal’s) Jules Bocande in our first group game, and I did the job well.
“Our players can become big names in Brazil if they are focused and determined. We should believe in Keshi. He has proved himself by winning the Africa Cup of Nations and giving us a ticket to the World Cup.
“He needs top friendly matches to prepare the team for the World Cup. I’m happy that we will face Mexico (in the United States on March 5).
However, the Shooting Stars team manager urged his former Eagles teammate to pick his players for the World Cup “based on their current form”.
“I’m not against Osaze Odemwingie’s return to the national team but he shouldn’t stroll into the team without needing to fight for his place,” he said.
“Joseph Yobo is still relevant to the Eagles but he should also fight for his place in the World Cup squad.
“I watched him against Manchester City and he convinced me that he still has a lot to offer the country.
“(Godfrey) Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo are good defenders but we need Yobo’s experience.”
Babalade maintains that out-of-favour Villarreal striker Ikechukwu Uche deserves a place in the World Cup squad, saying the player has returned to top form.
“Uche is our deadliest striker and his inclusion in the World Cup squad will help the country in Brazil,” he said.
